Raystede Animal Shelter - Horses, Ponies And Donkeys

Last time I visited Raystede Animal Shelter I took photos of their horses, ponies and donkeys, i.e. their equine department. My photographer friend Linda Johnstone came along with me so we did the shoot together.

This is what Raystede tell about their horses and ponies on their website: "Raystede is a retirement home for these animals as they have had hard working lives or health problems and now deserve a rest. Others live here because they have behavioural problems which made them unsuitable for riding. Here our equines live in a more natural way, outside in herds and with constant access to shelter."

We met some real characters during our shoot and had great fun regardless of the drizzly weather. Here are some of the photos I took.

These two were Danny and Blue, and they are friends and spend a lot of time together.

This tiny (well, tiny height wise) pony looks just like a cartoon character!

Then there was this cute filly... her name is probably going to be April, as she was born on a wet April day. Her mother was brought in only in January this year - she had been abandoned and was in a very bad shape when found. You can read more about Daisy on Raystede News section. (warning: it is a heart-wrenching story)

Saul is completely blind, and very sweet.

While we were trying to take photos of other ponies, April sneaked up on Linda to nibble her ear.

Then we went to see the donkeys.

...and came across these three amigos. Or amigas, rather - apparently they are mother and two daughters.

Aren't they great? :)

Our last stop was to take photos of the big horses. I only got one decent photo, really, as it was raining by now and we just quickly grabbed any headshots we could get.

A couple more photos of the fantastic April the filly.

On my next visit to Raystede I'm going to take photos of the exotic birds. The birds also are permanent residents at Raystede, rather than waiting to find new homes.
